The Virginia Wesleyan University women's Volleyball team (10-0, 1-0 ODAC) defeated Randolph-Macon in a five-set thriller.
Abigail Mahoney hit a person-best with 23 kills, which is tied for third all-time for most kills in a single game.
This is the first time a Marlin has recorded 20 or more kills in a single game since Doneisha Hall did it in October 2018 at Ferrum.
Mahoney had a .409 hitting percentage, two digs, and one block assist,
Morgan Ludovici had 14 kills, a .184 hitting percentage, 17 digs, four assists, and one service ace, and
Kate Ayre registered 12 kills with a .524 hitting percentage, three block assists, and two digs.
Haley Sutton led the team with 34 assists, had 13 digs, and two kills,
Hannah Smith led the team with 25 digs, recorded ten kills three block assists, and two service aces, and
Cara Caruso had 22 digs and four assists.
The Marlins came out to a hot start going on a 6-0 run, and extended their lead to take a 9-4 lead over Randolph-Macon. Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure and led by a 14-6 margin midway through the first set. However, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 14-14, the Marlins countered with a 3-0 run to lead 17-14. The Yellow Jackets regained the momentum, outscoring VWU 5-1 to take a 19-18 lead. Virginia Wesleyan fought back with a 3-0 rally to lead 21-19, but RMC responded with a 3-0 run to lead 22-21. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Marlins 6-2 to take set one 25-23.
The Yellow Jackets fought hard and had a 10-6 lead, the Marlins countered with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 11-10. The two teams traded points until Randolph Macon went on a 3-0 to lead 16-14. VWU came back, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 5-2 tying the game at 19 all. Virginia Wesleyan tied the game at 22-22, but the Yellow Jackets outscored the Marlins 3-1 to take set two 25-23.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the third set, but the Yellow Jackets stormed back to cut the host lead to 12-10. The Marlins responded by outscoring Randolph Macon 13-3 to win the third set 25-13.
In the fourth set, the two teams were in a heated battle, deadlocked at 10-10, but the Marlins turned up the heat and went on a 9-1 run to lead 19-12. Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure on and outscored the Yellow Jackets 4-2 down the stretch to win set four 25-17.
The fifth and final set was a close battle as the team traded points tied at 6-6 until the Marlins outscored the Yellow Jackets 7-1 to take a 13-7 lead. Randolph Macon went on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 14-11 before
Abigail Mahoney got the final kill of the game to seal the 3-2 win over ODAC opponent Randolph Macon.
