Marlins Edged by Roanoke on Senior Day

The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team (5-26-1, 4-13-1 ODAC) lost both games of a doubleheader to Roanoke College 11-9 and 8-5. 


Before the start of the game the, Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team honored its ten-member senior class composed of; Ryan Ballard, Braxton Downum, Connor Hall, Trent Hanchey, Jaelen Hines, Samuel Kasprow, Jake Ness, Cam Nolet, Matt Sinko, and Dominick Spinoso
 
Game One: 
Roanoke scored one run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. 
 
They added another run in the third, fourth, and fifth to make the game 4-0. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, James Gifford reached on an error, Michael Burton Jr. singled up the middle, and Jaelen Hines walked before Matt Sinko hit a grand slam to left field to tie the game 4-4. 
 
Roanoke added two runs in the top of the sixth. 
 
James Gifford singled to left and scored Chris Mitchell Jr. in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Connor Hall singled up the middle and moved to second with a single from Tanner Clements followed by a Samuel Kasprow double to left field to score Connor Hall to tie the game at 6-6. 
 
Roanoke scored five more runs in the eighth to take an 11-6 lead.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Connor Hall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Michael Burton Jr. Followed by Tanner Clements reaching first on a fielder's choice to score Jaelen Hines from third to bring the score to 11-8.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Jaelen Hines reached on an error by left field and Jake Ness scored. 
 
Matt Sinko went 2-for-6 with a grand slam, four RBI, and scored one run. Michael Burton Jr. went 3-for-6 and scored two runs. He also hit a double for the Marlins. 
 
Nick Beatty started for the Marlins, pitching five innings and giving up six hits and five runs, and tallied seven strikeouts. Sal Lettieri got the loss and pitched 2.1 innings giving up four hits and four runs and recording one strikeout. 
 
Game Two:
Roanoke scored four runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
 
In the third, Ryan Ballard hit a lead-off single, followed by another single from James Gifford, and Michael Burton Jr. doubled to left field to drive in Ryan Ballard. Jaelen Hines grounded out to second base to score James Gifford. Finally, Matt Sinko hit a sacrifice fly to center field and scored Michael Burton Jr. to make the game 6-3. 
 
In the fifth, James Gifford hit a lead-off home run to left field, and then Michael Burton Jr. scored on a wild pitch to make the game 6-5. 
 
In the eighth, Roanoke added two more runs to make the game 8-5.
 
Michael Burton Jr. went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs. He doubled for the Marlins. James Gifford went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs. He also hit a solo home run.
 
Cam Nolet started and got the loss as he pitched 5.2 innings for the Marlins. He gave up seven hits and six runs, five of which were earned. He walked four batters and struck out another four. Ryan Cowell pitched 1.1 innings in relief and gave up no hits or runs while striking out two batters.
