The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team (4-18-1, 3-6-1 ODAC) fell to No. 4 Shenandoah University Hornets, dropping game one 9-1, and then falling just short in game two 6-5.
Game One:
The Marlins took a one run lead in the top of the third after Trent Hanchey hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring John Bastiaans.
However, the Hornets answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, making the game 3-1.
Shenandoah added another run in the fifth to make it 4-1.
The Hornets scored two more runs in the sixth to make the score 7-1 before adding another two in the eighth as the game became the final score, 9-1.
Matt Sinko went 2-for-4 for the Marlins, and Trent Hanchey went 0-for-3 with one RBI.
Cam Nolet started and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits, seven runs, and four strikeouts. In relief, Nick Beatty was effective over the 1.1 innings he pitched, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one batter.
Game Two:
The Hornets struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning to make the game 1-0.
The Marlins answered in the third as Jaelen Hines grounded out to second base and scored Chris Mitchell Jr. to make it 1-1.
In the fourth, Trent Hanchey singled to center field and scored Matt Sinko to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Connor Hall singled to right field and scored Matt Sinko and Michael Burton Jr. Then, Jake Ness singled to right field and scored Connor Hall, making the score 5-1.
In the fifth, the Hornets came charging back and scored five runs to help them edge past the Marlins 6-5.
Matt Sinko went 2-for-5, hitting two doubles and score twice. Trent Hanchey went 2-for-2 with two walks, and one RBI.
Micah Fox started for the Marlins and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, and four runs, only one earned run, and tallied five strikeouts. The loss went to Ryan Cowell who pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and one walk.
