Szudera's Eight Points Push Marlins Past Randolph 21-6

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (4-10, 2-4 ODAC) beat conference opponent Randolph 21-6.

Mikayla Szudera led the offense with eight points, five goals and three assists to reach 105 career points, Michaela Elston had seven points, three goals, and four assists, and one caused turnover.

 Helen Kennedy-Butler registered six points, five goals one assists, to crack the top ten in the program's history for career points, she now sits tied for eighth on the list with Tara Harding '11, and teammate Natalie Dunn recorded seven points, five goals, and two assists, and had one ground ball. 

Randolph got on the board first, scoring in the first minute of play, but the Marlins responded as Michaela Elston scored less than a minute late to tie the game at 1-1. Virginia Wesleyan scored six straight goals to close out the first quarter up 6-1. Mikayla Szudera scored an unassisted goal at the 7:31 mark, then Elston notched her second of the game, and Helen Kennedy-Butler got her first on the game at the 4:44 mark to lead 4-1. Elston scored off a free position shot, followed by a goal from another free position goal Natalie Dunn to lead 6-1 at the end of the quarter. 

VWU outscored the Wildcats 8-1 in the second quarter. Natalie Dunn scored her second goal, followed by a goal from Madison Pfister with a nice pass from Elston, and Kennedy-Butler had an unassisted goal to lead 9-1. Randolph scored down a player to cut the lead to 9-2, but the duo Helen Kennedy-Butler's goal and Mikayla Szudera's assist sparked a five-goal rally from the Marlins. Szudera scored next off a pass from Elston, followed by a goal from Dunn off a feed from Szudera. Madison Reid got in on the action scoring a goal with an assist from Szudera, and Dunn scored just before the break, off an assist from Elston to give the Marlins a 14-2 lead. 

Out of the break, the Wildcats chipped away at the Marlins' lead scoring two goals to cut the lead down to 14-4. Szudera stopped the bleeding scoring back-to-back goals, with the first goal assisted by Dunn and the second on a free position shot. Madison Pfister found the back of the net with an assist from Elston and Natalie Dunn notched a goal off a feed from Kennedy-Butler to give the Marlins an 18-4 advantage going into the final frame. 

Helen Kennedy-Butler scored the first goal of the fourth quarter off a pass from Camryn Gavula, but the Wildcats responded to bring the lead to 19-5. Kennedy-Butler scored again this time off a pass from Natalie Dunn. The Wildcats scored to bring the score to 20-6, however, Mikayla Szudera scored a free position shot with under two minutes to go to take a 21-6 lead. 

Brittneyann Hoover registered the win in net, playing all 60 minutes, five goals against, and made five saves, Madison Pfister did it all, scoring two goals, notched nine draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls.

Camryn Gavula tallied one assist, caused a team-high three turnovers, four draw controls, and one ground ball, and teammate Madison Reid scored her first career goal.
