The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (1-11) was defeated by visitors PSU Harrisburg 16-12.
After a scoreless first inning, the Marlins got on the board in the second scoring three runs. Michael Burton started the rally with a double to right field, followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases. Chris Mitchell singled to right center field to score the runners on second and third. Jalean Hines hits a slow single to the shortstop to score
Edgar Harwood from third to take a 3-0 lead.
Both teams scored 13 combined runs in the third inning. The Lions got on the board in the top of the third, starting with a two-run home run. PSU went on to score seven runs to lead 7-3.
VWU fought back and scored six runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead at 9-7. Trent Henchey hit a lead-off double followed by a two RBI home run by
Matt Sinko.
Jake Ness and Harwood single before Mitchell singled up the middle to score both runners, tying the game at 7-7. Hanchey reached first on an error by the left fielder scoring two runs to take a 9-7 lead.
The Lions scored one run in the fourth to cut the Marlins' lead down to 9-8. However, Sinko responded with a solo homer to left center field to extend the lead to 10-8.
The Lions' bats kept going as they scored three runs in the seventh to take an 11-10 lead. VWU responded with one run to tie the game at 11-11, as Burton singled with the bases loaded.
PSU scored three runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to lead 16-11 going into the bottom of the ninth. The Marlins started to rally and scored one run, Bastiaans scored from first on a single up the middle from Burton, but the Lions went on to win 16-12.
Matt Sinko led the team as he went 2-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI, and two runs, Christ Mitchell Jr. went 3-for-6, with four RBI, and scored one run, and DH
Michael Burton Jr. went 3-for-6, with two RBI, and scored one run.
Micah Fox was the most effective pitcher on the mound as he pitched 3.2 innings in relief allowing two hits, one run, and two strikeouts.
