The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (2-11-1, 1-0-1 ODAC) went 1-0-1 against ODAC opponent Guilford College. VWU won game one 14-5 and tied game two 5-5.
Game One:
The Marlins scored their first run in the top of the first as
Michael Burton Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by
Jake Ness being walked to take a 2-0 lead. The Quakers scored one run in the first to cut the lead down to 2-1.
Chris Mitchell started the second with a lead-off single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and
Jaelen Hines hit a sacrifice bunt to move Mitchell to third.
Trent Hanchey singled up the middle with runners on the corners to score Mitchell.
Matt Sinko hit a two RBI double to right field to give VWU a 5-1 lead after two innings.
In the third inning, Virginia Wesleyan scored a run as Hines hit a triple to right center field scoring Mitchell from first, 6-1. The Quakers scored one run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-2.
Hanchey hit a lead-off double in the fourth, then Sinko doubled to center field to extend the Marlins' lead to 7-2.
Guilford rallied in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs to bring the score to 7-5. VWU responded in the top of the sixth as Sinko doubled down the right field line with Hanchey on first to score.
Edgar Harwood came up to the plate with runners on second and third and reached first on an error by the shortstop to score Sinko from third to lead 9-5 after six innings.
Virginia Wesleyan tallied five runs in the top of the ninth to seal the 14-5 win over the Quakers in game one.
Matt Sinko led the offense as he went 4-for-5 with three doubles, scored two runs, and had a team-high four RBI,
Trent Hanchey went 4-for-6 at bat with two doubles, scored four runs, and registered three RBI, and
Michael Burton Jr. went 2-for-3, scored one run and had one RBI.
Cam Nolet started the game and pitched 4.1 innings, allowed five runs off eight hits, and tallied five strikeouts and
Micah Fox pitched 4.2 innings, allowed zero runs, four hits, and had one strikeout.
Game Two:
The Marlins scored one run in the top of the second as
John Bastiaans hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to take a 1-0 lead. The Quakers responded in the bottom of the first tying the game at 1-1.
Guilford took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an error by the left fielder with runners on first a second. Virginia Wesleyan came back in the top of the fifth scoring two runs. Chris Mitchell started with a lead-off double,
Jaelen Hines advanced Mitchell to third on a sacrifice bunt, and
Trent Hanchey doubled to right center field scoring Mitchell.
Matt Sinko singled through the left side to score Hanchey from second to take a 3-2 lead.
The Quakers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
VWU scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning tying the ball game at 5-5. Sinko singled to start the rally, then Bastiaans singled to right center to score Sinko and Bastiaans scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

John Bastiaans went 1-for-3, scored one run, and recorded one RBI.
Connor Mock pitched well on the mound as he pitched 3.0 innings, allowed three runs on two hits, and had two strikeouts, and
Ryan Cowell pitched 3.1 innings, allowed one run on one hit, and registered three strikeouts.
