The No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (15-5, 1-1 ODAC) split the doubleheader against No. 16 Lynchburg in conference play, winning game one 5-0 and dropping game two 6-3.
Emily Seale recorded her fifth complete game shutout of the season in game one, pitched 7.0 innings, allowed five hits, and tallied four strikeouts.
Game One:
The Marlins scored in the top of the first, as
Caitlin Myers singled through the left side to score
Alison Pollack from second to lead 1-0.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead in the fifth. Two errors put runners on second and third for
Autumn Boothe who hit a two RBI single through the right side that scored both runners giving the Marlins a 3-0 lead.
VWU added two more insurance runs in the seventh.
Brooke Anderson hit a lead-off single and stole second base followed by a single from Pollack to put runners on the corners. Boothe singled to center field that scored Anderson and Pollack to lead 5-0.
Autumn Boothe led the offense going 2-for-4 with four RBI, and
Alison Pollack went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Sarah Prosser went 2-for-4 and scored one run, and teammate
Caitlin Myers went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Game Two:
Lynchburg came back strong in game two, building a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and two in the third.
Virginia Wesleyan responded in the fourth inning with a two-run homer from
Julia Piotrowski that scored
Emily Halloway to cut the Hornets' lead to 4-2.
The Marlins scored one more in the sixth as Jenna Larid pinch ran for
Alison Pollack who hit a leadoff single and advanced to third for
Caitlin Myers. Myers grounded out to second base scoring Laird on third to come within one of the hosts at 4-3.
The Hornets responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to seal the 6-3 win.
Julia Piotrowski led the team going 2-for-3 at bat with one double and a home run, scored one run, and had two RBI,
Alison Pollack, and
Autumn Boothe went 1-for-3, and
Caitlin Myers went 0-for-3 with one RBI.
