The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (8-4) split a doubleheader against No. 2 Christopher Newport, falling in game one 6-5 and winning game two 7-4.
Game One:
The Captains started game one by scoring two runs in the first inning, scoring one in the third, and adding one in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead after four innings.
Virginia Wesleyan got on the board in the fifth inning as
Laci Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Mirandah Jenkins from third.
CNU added one run in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Marlins rallied in the sixth,
Alison Pollack had a lead-off walk and advanced to third on two wild pitches.
Julia Piotrowski singled to right field to score Pollack.
Caitlin Myers was walked to put runners on first and second, followed by a homer run by
Madison Hudson to tie the game at 5-5.
The Captains hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5.
Madison Hudson led the offense going 1-for-2 with a home run, scored one run, and had three RBI,
Julia Piotrowski went 1-for-1, scored one run, and one RBI, and
Laci Campbell went 1-for-2, with one RBI.
Emily Seale took the loss in the circle, she pitched 6.0 innings, allowed six runs on seven hits, and registered five strikeouts.
Game Two:
After two scoreless innings, the Marlins broke the deadlock with a throwing error by the third baseman who scored
Sarah Prosser from third to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Madison Hudson had her second homer of the day to left field to double Virginia Wesleyans' lead at 2-0.
The Captains rallied in the fifth scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Marlins had a big sixth inning and scored four runs to lead 6-4.
Julia Piotrowski hit a lead-off single, then
Caitlin Myers hit a single putting two runners on for
Olivia Knight who hit a single through the left side to score Piotrowski.
Sarah Prosser hit a bunt single to load the bases.
Alison Pollack hit a three RBI double to left center that gave VWU a 6-4 lead.
The Marlins added one run in the seventh off a home run from Piotrowski to seal the 7-4 win over the Captains.
