The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (7-3) defeated Transylvania University 5-2 on the last day of the Cross Bay Bash.
The Marlins scored in the bottom of the third as
Jenna Laird reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, then
Laci Campbell singled down the right field, where Laird scored on a throwing error from right field to take a 1-0 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan extended their lead in the fourth as they scored two more in the bottom of the fourth.
Emma Adams hit a lead-off double to left center,
Autumn Boothe singled up the middle to score Adams.
Julia Piotrowski hit a sacrifice bunt to move the pinch runner Jada Diggs-Hagwood to third, and
Caitlin Myers flew to center field in the sacrifice fly to score the runner from third.
The Pioneers got on the board in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 3-1. The Marlins responded in the bottom of the sixth Pollack walked in the bottom of the sixth, Mikiya Himes came in to pinch run for Pollack and stole second, and Boothe hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Himes from second. Piotrowski tripled to center field, and
Caitlin Myers singled up the middle scoring Piotrowski from third to take a 5-1 lead.
Transylvania scored in the top of the seventh to cut the lead down to 5-2, but the Marlins' defense held strong.
Autumn Boothe went 1-for-2, with two RBI,
Caitlin Myers went 1-for-2 at bat with two RBI, and
Julia Piotrowski went 1-for-2 with a triple and scored one run.
Emily Seale pitched a complete game, allowing two runs off four hits, and two strikeouts.
