No. 7 Softball opens 2023 season with doubleheader sweep of Meredith; Adams pitches no-hitter in game two

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan softball team swept the Avenging Angels of Meredith College in the season opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Broyles Field in TowneBank Park. The Marlins won game one 8-0 in six innings and claimed game two 3-0.

The two teams were evenly matched through the opening three innings of the first game. VWU (2-0) held MC (0-2) scoreless in the remaining three innings while posting eight runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

The Marlins got things going with a single run in the fourth as an Alison Pollack drove home Brooke Powell. A Caitlyn Myers triple to right field in the top of the fifth sent home Sarah Prosser and Julia Piotrowski which began a five-run bottom of the fifth inning. Emma Adams sent home Myers on a single to left while Jaya Diggs-Hagwood came home on a throwing error by the catcher. Pollack came in clutch again with her second single of the game to left field that scored Madison Hudson for the fifth run.

Two more runs came home in the bottom of the sixth giving the Marlins an 8-0 run-rule win. A pair of singles, one each from Piotrowski and Diggs-Hagwood, sent in Laci Campbell and Prosser for the final runs.

Emily Seale (W: 1-0) struck out eight batters of 17 batters faced giving up only two hits through five innings pitched.

Game two was another pitching battle and saw the Marlins score early on as a Madison Hudson double to left field scored Alison Pollack and Brooke Anderson

Neither team managed to score in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings despite the Marlins leaving the bases loaded in the second and having two others left on base in the other three innings.

The last Marlin run came in the bottom of the sixth as Campbell drove in Halee Hawkins for the third VWU run.

First year pitcher, Emma Adams (W: 1-0) collected the win pitching a no-hitter through all seven innings during which she struck out eight batters of 24 faced.

The Marlins return to the field against on Wednesday, March 1, when they host the No. 3 Sea Gulls of Salisbury University at Broyles Field in TowneBank Park in Virignia Beach, VA. Game times are set for 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.
