VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell to the Blazers from Hood College 17-11 despite a strong third quarter.
Liam Murphy repeated as the leading scorer for the Marlins with four goals while
Mark Sprague added a hat trick of his own.
The Blazers (2-0) opened the scoring with a pair of goals before
Jackson Dinger connected with the goal for the Marlins first score of the game. Hood added two more goals before Virginia Wesleyan answered with two of their own, one each from
Daniel Auxier and
Liam Murphy, both scored within 15 seconds of each other. HC added one last goal in the first quarter to lead 5-3 heading into the second period.
Hood outscored Virginia Wesleyan in the second quarter putting five goals in the net while holding the Marlins to a single goal scored by Auxier about four minutes into the period.
VWU came out of the halftime break scoring two of the first three goals before HC scored three consecutive putting the score at 14-6.
Mark Sprague and Murphy scored the last three goals of the third period and combined to score all five of the Marlins goals as the teams entered the final quarter with the score sitting at 14-9.
The Marlins added two more goals to their total score book ending the fourth quarter as
Myzaiah Garris and
Mark Sprague each scored a goal for VWU. The Blazers added three goals of their own pushing the final score to 17-11.
Junior keeper
Allen Shaw (W: 1-1) played all 60 minutes between the pipes giving up 17 goals while making 16 saves.
Floyd Wells led the Marlins with five ground balls, while
Mark Sprague and
Kris Barnum added four ground balls each.
Sam Edwards tallied three caused turnovers.
The Marlins (1-1) will return to the field next weekend when they host host back-to-back matches on Saturday and Sunday against Husson University and Wabash College. The match against the Eagles is set to start at 12 PM Saturday, while the Little Giants and Marlins face off at 1 PM Sunday.
