VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team dropped a twinbill against the NCAA Reigning National Champions No. 7 Eastern Connecticut State University dropping the two games 10-5 and 8-4.
The Warriors got on the board early scoring a trio of runs in the top of the first inning and added two more in the top of the third while holding the Marlins off the scoreboard through the first four innings.
Both teams added two runs in the fifth inning putting the score at 7-2. The first Marlin run was driven in by
Jake Ness who singled to right field driving in
Edgar Harwood. Ness later scored the second run coming home on a wild pitch.
ECSU added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning taking a 10-2 lead. VWU added three more runs to its total in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to pull within five runs but ran out of time dropping game one 10-5.
The Marlins two runs in the eighth inning were scored by
Matt Sinko who homered to left field which drove in
Connor Hall on the play. The last VWU run was scored by Ness who came home on an error during
Keegan Megaro's at-bat.
Game two started on a slightly different foot as the Marlins were the first to score posting a single run in the bottom of the first. A
Trent Hanchey single to center field drove home
Jaelen Hines to get on the board.
The Warriors responded with six runs over the next two innings, three in each half inning of play, taking a 6-1 lead. Virginia Wesleyan added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as a
Connor Hall single to center drove in Hines and an
Edgar Harwood double to left sent Hall on home.
VWU pulled within two runs, trailing 6-4, in the bottom of the eighth when a
Jake Ness double to right field drove in Harwood, but ECSU put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth with two more runs that the Marlins couldn't respond to in the bottom half of the inning claiming the game 8-4.
The Marlins return to action on Sunday, Fabruary 26, when they conclude the three-game series with the Warriors. First pitch is set for 12 PM at Kenneth R. Perry Field at TowneBank Park.
