Women's Basketball Falls to St. Mary's 63-49

The Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team (3-6, 1-4 ODAC) was defeated by St. Mary's College of Maryland 63-49.

Mekayla Clarke led the team in scoring with 11 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists, Logan Carter recorded nine points shooting 4-for-6 from the field, and grabbed four rebounds, and Maesyn Blaylock had eight points shooting 4-for-9 from the field, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal. 

Keys to the Game:

  • The Marlins shot 21-for-51 (41.2%) from the field, and 3-for-6 (50%) from beyond the arc, while the Seahawks shot 25-for-64 (39.1%) from the field and 4-for-27 (14.8%) from three-point territory. 
  • St. Marys did well in the paint outscoring the Marlins 40-24, and outrebounded VWU 40-31. 
  • The Marlins bench had the advantage as they scored 13 points compared to the Seahawks 12. 

How It Happened:

The Marlins had a good start to the game jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Seahawks came back to lead 6-5 midway through the first quarter. VWU went on an 11-0 run to build a 16-6 lead and ended the quarter with a 16-8 lead over the host. 

In the second quarter, the Seahawks went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 18-15. However, the Marlins responded with a 4-0 run to lead 22-15 with 2:24 left in the second quarter. St. Mary's outscored the Marlins 7-4 the rest of the quarter, but the Marlins held a 26-22 lead going into halftime. 

A close third quarter as Virginia Wesleyan was able to hold a two-possession lead for the majority of the quarter until the Seahawks went on a 6-0 run to cut the Marlins lead to 36-34. VWU made a three in the last minute of the quarter to put them up 39-34 heading into the final frame. 

St. Mary's kept their momentum from the third quarter and started with a 6-0 run that gave them a 40-39 lead. The Marlins fought back but the Seahawks kept scoring and held a one-point lead until the host went on a 9-0 run to lead 51-43. St. Mary's went on to win 63-49 at home.
