Women's Basketball Falls to Methodist 68-52

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-7, 1-4 ODAC) falls to Methodist 68-52.

Grace Harriman led the team with 14 points shooting 7-for-12 from the floor, with seven rebounds, and one steal, Juliana Anderson scored nine points and shot 3-for-9 from the field, and 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, two assists, one rebound, and Mekayla Clarke had eight points shooting 4-for-9 from the field, nine rebounds, one assist, and two steals.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Monarchs shot 29-for-58 (50%) from the field and 4-for-9 (44.4% from three-point territory, while the Marlins shot 22-for-59 (37.3%) and 6-for-18 (33.3%) from beyond the arc.
  • Methodist had 39 rebounds compared to 29 from Virginia Wesleyan, and the visitors recorded 44 points in the paint compared to 30 for the host. 
  • Methodist caused 18 turnovers, 10 steal,s and two blocks, while the Marlins caused 17 with five steals. 

How it Happened:

The Marlins started the games strong going up 9-4 in the first five minutes of play. The Monarchs responded with an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead over VWU. The Marlins finished the quarter with a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 14-13. 

VWU went on a 5-2 run to take an 18-16 lead in the second quarter. Methodist responded with a 7-4 run to take a 23-22 lead with 2:40 left in the half. Each team scored six points in the last three minutes to give Methodist a 29-28 advantage going into halftime. 

The Monarchs extended their lead to 40-32 at the beginning of the second half, Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 6-3 run to bring the score to 43-38. Methodist ended the quarter with a 47-38 lead. 

Methodist held a healthy lead to start the fourth quarter, but the Marlins fought back with five quick points 73 seconds apart to cut the lead down to 59-45. The Monarchs went on to win the game 68-52.
