The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-5, 1-4 ODAC) were defeated by conference opponent Averett 65-57.
Virginia Wesleyan's offense was led by Mekayla Clarke who scored 17 points shooting 6-for-11 from the field, 5-for-6 from the free throw line, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal, Grace Harriman scored 12 points shooting 5-for-11 from the field, grabbed three rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Maesyn Blaylock scored 10 points shooting 4-for-5 from the field, with seven rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal, and teammate Juliana Anderson registered 10 points shooting 3-for-10 from the field, one rebound, and one steal.
Keys to the Game:
- The Cougars shot 29-for-66 (43.9%) from the field, while the Marlins shot 20-for-52 (38.5%).
- Averett had 52 points in the paint compared to the Marlins 36, and had 20 second chance points versus VWU's three.
- The Marlins went 17-for-20 from the free throw line while the Cougars went 5-for-8.
How it Happened:
The Marlins scored the first points off the game, but the Cougars took a 9-5 lead at the 3:32 mark in the first quarter. VWU responded witha 8-0 run to take an 13-9 lead. Averett countered with a 4-0 run to tie the game in the final seconds of quarter one.
The Cougars went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 lead to start the second quarter. Averett outscored the Marlins 21-8 in the second quarter to lead 34-21 at halftime.
The Cougars went on a 9-0 run coming out of the break, but the Marlins responded with and 11-0 run to cut the deal down to 43-32. Virginia Wesleyan finished the third quarter with a 6-2 run to bring the score to 45-38 heading into the final frame.
The Cougars fought back in the fourth quarter going on a 6-0 run to start the fourth, but VWU responded with an 11-4 run to cut the lead down to 55-49 with 5:05 left int he quarter. Averett countered with a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 61-51. The Cougars ended the game with a 6-4 run to seal the 65-57 win over the Marlins.
