The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-4, 1-3 ODAC) cruised past non-conference opponent Mid-Atlantic Christian University 61-24.
Logan Carter led the team with 12 points shooting 6-for-9 from the field, had four steals, three rebounds, and two assists, Jada Norman registered 10 points shooting 3-for-7 from the field, and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, with seven rebounds, and two steals, and one assist, and Maesyn Blaylock recorded nine points shooting 3-for-7 from the field, four rebounds, one steal, and one block.
Keys to the Game:
- The Marlins shot 25-for-70 (35.7%) from the field, compared to the Mustangs 9-for-50 (18%).
- VWU caused 31 turnovers, including 22 steals, and two blocks to score 37 points off turnovers, while Mid-Atlantic Christian University caused 15 turnovers, five steals, and scored five points off turnovers.
- Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Mustangs in the paint 30-14 and tallied 16 fast break points compared to three for the visitors.
How it Happened:
The Mustangs scored the first basket of the contest, but the Marlins went on a 13-0 run to take a 13-2 lead. Mid-Atlantic Christian University scored a basket, but then Jada Norman hit a three to put VWU up 16-4 to close out the first quarter.
Mid-Atlantic Christian University drew a foul and scored a free throw, but the Marlins kept up the defensive pressure and went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 23-5. The Mustangs went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 23-9. Virginia Wesleyan went into halftime with a 29-11 lead.
The Mustangs came out and went on a 5-1 run to start the third quarter. However, the Marlins responded with a 6-0 run to lead 38-16 with 4:51 left in the third frame. VWU outscored the Mustangs 10-5 the rest of the third quarter to lead 48-21 going into the fourth quarter.
The Marlins outscored the Mustangs 13-3 in the final frame to seal their second straight win.
