Marlins Beat Hollins in Overtime Thriller 65-63

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-4, 1-3 ODAC) defeated Hollins 65-63 in overtime. 

Three players scored 15 points for the Marlins, Maesyn Blaylock scored 15 points shooting 4-for-5 from the field, with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists, Jada Norman scored 15 shooting 4-for-13 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, six rebounds, and one assist, and Juliana Anderson scored a career-high 15 points shooting 5-for-5 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point territory, and had one steal.

Keys to the Game:

  • VWU had the edge in fast break points scoring 14 compared to Hollins's five. 
  • Hollins had the advantage in the post scoring 42 points in the paint compared to the Marlins 22.
  • The game came down to shooting, as the Marlins shot 19-for-50 (38%) from the field, while Hollins shot 27-for-67 (40.3%), VWU shot 6-for-10 (60%) from three-point territory, with Hollins shooting just 3-for-12 (25%), and lastly, Virginia Wesleyan was 21-for-28 from the free throw line, while the visitors where 6-for-20.

How It Happened:

Hollins started well building a 5-0 lead to start the game, but the Marlins swam back with a 7-0 run to take a 7-5 lead. Virginia Wesleyan outscored Hollins 6-5 the rest of the quarter to lead 13-10. 

Hollins went on a 6-2 run to start the second quarter to lead 16-15, but VWU countered with their own 6-2 run to lead 21-18 with 3:37 left in the first half. Both teams traded buckets, scoring six before halftime to give the Marlins a 27-24 lead. 

The Marlins held a one-possession lead at the start of the third quarter until the Marlins went on a 7-0 run midway through the quarter to lead 38-28. Virginia Wesleyan outscored Hollins 19-9 in the third quarter to lead 46-33 heading into the final frame. 

Hollins came out strong to start the fourth quarter, going on a 14-3 run to cut the Marlins lead down to 49-47. Virginia Wesleyan scored two straight layups to go up 53-47 with three minutes left in the game. Hollins went on a 3-0 scoring their first free throw, grabbing the offensive rebound off the missed second free throw, and scoring to cut the lead to 53-50. Hollins made another two free throws, bringing the score to 53-52. Blaylock was fouled and scored a free throw to go up 54-52 with six seconds left in the game. Hollins called a timeout to advance the ball and Hollins was able to draw up a play that scored in the last second to tie the game at 54-54 and force overtime. 

Five minutes of overtime were set to be played and the Marlins started strong going on a 7-0 run fueled by a technical foul on the Hollins bench. The Marlins led 63-56 with 1:48 left in the game, but Hollins had a late surge going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 63-61. However, two made free throws from Logan Carter put the game out of reach for Hollins to seal the 65-63 win.
