Marlins Hold Off Belhaven in 67-61 Win

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (12-1, 3-1 ODAC) beat Belhaven 67-61 to win the North Beach Plastic Surgery X-Mas Classic.

Jordan Crump tied a career-high 29 points shooting 9-for-15 from the field, and 7-for-13 from beyond the arc, grabbed five rebounds, two assists, and one steal, Khaliyl Davis registered 10 points shooting 4-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from three-point territory, two steals, and one rebound, and Miles Wallace scored seven points shooting 2-for-9 from three-point territory, grabbed four rebounds, six assists, and two steals. 

Keys to the Game:

  • Belhaven shot 22-for-57 (38.6%) from the field, shot 8-for-21 (38.1%), and 9-for-13 from the free throw line, while the Marlins shot 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the field, 13-for-36 (36.1%) from three-point territory, and shot 10-for-15 from the charity stripe. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan outrebounded the Blazers 41-36, with 14 offensive rebounds compared to the visitors 10. 
  • VWU caused ten turnovers with six steals, and three blocks to score 13 points off turnovers, while the Blazers caused nine turnovers, with one steal, and two blocks, and scored 12 points off turnovers. 

How it Happened:

The Marlins jumped out to an 8-4 lead to start the game, but the Blazers responded with a 17-0 run to take a 21-8 lead with 8:29 left in the first quarter. Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 20-7 run to tie the game in the final second of the half at 28-28. 

VWU halftime adjustments worked wonders as they started the second half with an 18-5 run shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc to take a 46-33 lead. Belhaven responded with a 10-4 run to cut the lead down to 50-43 with 11:07 left in regulation. The Blazers chipped away at the Marlins lead over the next four minutes with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 52-52. 

Virginia Wesleyan responded with back-to-back threes to take a 58-52 lead, but the Blazers came back with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 60 all. The Marlins outscored Belhaven 7-1 the rest of the game with four free throws and a made three from Jordan Crump to seal the 67-61 win.
