Men's Basketball Cruise Past Johnson & Wales 78-45

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (11-1, 3-1 ODAC) cruised past non-conference opponent Johnson & Wales 78-45. 

Waylo Wilson led the team in points with 15 shooting 6-for-9 from the field, grabbing six rebounds, three blocks, and one steal, Miles Wallace recorded 10 points shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, two rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Jordan Crump had 10 points shooting 4-for-7 from the field, 2-for-5 from three-point territory, four rebounds, and three assists.

Keys to the Game:

  • VWU dominated in the paint scoring 44 points compared to 22 for the Wildcats.
  • Virginia Wesleyan outrebounded Johnson & Wales 47-37, which led to 20 second chance points, while the visitor tallied eight.
  • The Marlins' defense held strong as this is the sixth opponent they have held to less than 50 points this season. The Marlins' defense caused 18 turnovers with 12 steals, and four blocks, and scored 19 points off turnovers, while the Wildcats caused eight turnovers, with five steals, and three blocks and scored seven points off turnovers. 

How it Happened:

The Marlins built a 12-5 lead early in the game, but the Wildcats returned with a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 12-10. VWU responded with a 5-0 run of their own to extend their lead to 17-10, but Johnson & Wales came back to bring the score to 17-15. 

Virginia Wesleyan rallied, outscoring the Wildcats 16-0 over the next five minutes to jump out to a 33-15 lead. The Marlins offense cooled off at the end of the half but still held a 42-22 lead over the visitors going into the break. 

VWU scored the first five points of the second half to lead 47-22. The hot start started a great second half for the Marlins, where they outscored the Wildcats 36-23 to seal a 78-45 victory.
