The Marlins dominated in the first five minutes of play shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point territory to take a big 12-2 lead on the road that forced a CNU timeout.
Over the next ten minutes the Captains chipped away at the Marlins lead, outscoring VWU 17-9 to cut the lead down to 21-19. Virginia Wesleyan kept strong and got to the free throw line where they shot 4-for-6 to increase their lead to 30-26 at the end of the first half.
Christopher Newport made some critical halftime adjustments and went on a 15-10 run to take their first lead of the game at 41-40 with 13:12 left in the second half. The Marlins responded with a 7-1 run with two key threes from Crump and Khaliyl Davis to take a 47-42 lead over the Captains.
Virginia Wesleyan held on to their lead, however, CNU inched closer to the Marlins with an 8-3 run to bring the score to 59-57 with 5:01 left in regulation. Over the next three minutes, both teams needed to dig deep and VWU handled business and went on a 9-4 run shooting 3-for-4 in that span to lead 68-61.
CNU responded with a three-pointer to cut the advantage to four points, but the Marlins made some clutch free throws down to stretch to seal the 74-68 win over the Captains.
