The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (1-3, 0-2 ODAC) lost to Ferrum College 59-42.
Meadow Dyke led the team with 14 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field, with four rebounds, and one block, Maesyn Blaylock scored a career day scoring 10 points, shooting 4-for-12 from the field, six rebounds, six steals, and four assists, and Mekayla Clarke had eight points, shooting 4-for-15 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, and one assist.
Keys to the Game:
- The Panthers shot well from the field at 42 percent, while the Marlins shot 30 percent.
- Each team had 15 turnovers but the Marlins were able to capitalize scoring 19 points off turnovers compared to Ferrum's 17.
- Ferrum scored 30 points in the paint compared to the Marlins 24.
How It Happened:
The Marlins scored the first basket of the contest to go up 1-0, but the Panthers came back to take a 5-4 lead. The Marlins responded to take a 6-5 lead midway through the first quarter. Ferrum outscored VWU 6-2 the rest of the quarter to lead 11-8 after ten minutes.
The Panthers came out strong in the second quarter going up 23-10 in the first three minutes of the second frame. Until a good defensive switch to a zone by the Marlins gave the offense a boost. Virginia Wesleyan went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to 24-20 with 2:49 left in the quarter. Ferrum went on to hold a 28-20 lead at the break.
The third quarter was an even frame as both teams scored 13 points in the quarter to make it a 41-33 game heading into the final frame. The Panthers outscored VWU 18-9 in the final quarter to seal their 59-42 win.
