The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (4-0) beat non-conference opponent Methodist 61-48.
Omari DeVeaux led the team with 14 points shooting 5-for-15 from the field, and 2-for-9 from three-point territory, grabbed four rebounds, and had two assists, Khai Seargeant recorded 13 points shooting 2-for-6 from the field and 9-for-9 from the charity stripe, and had five rebounds, and Amari Moorer had ten points shooting 5-for-7 from the field, had four rebounds, and one assist.
Keys to the Game:
- The Marlins created the most second-chance scoring opportunities scoring 16 points compared to the Monarchs five.
- VWU needed help from the bench to cut through the Methodist zone, their bench scored 31 points compared to the Monachs' 16.
- It was a tale of two halves as VWU shot 21.21 percent from the floor and five percent from the three-point line in the first half, and in the second half the Marlins shot 50 percent from the floor and 22.22 percent from beyond the arc.
- Defensively, the Marlins have been excellent this year and have held their opponents to 49.0 points per game.
How it Happened:
The Monarchs started strong, building a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes, but the Marlins went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 7-5. The Methodist zone worked well as they went on a 6-0 run to lead 13-5, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with an 11-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Monarchs finished the half with an 11-6 run to lead 24-22 at the break.
Methodist looked to pull away from the Marlins as they made a good three to start the second half, but VWU fought back and went on a 7-2 run that tied the game at 29 all. Virginia Wesleyan kept their momentum and went on a 10-0 run to lead 39-29 with 12:44 left in the game.
The Monarchs fought hard and kept the Marlins lead within three possessions until the Marlins went on an 8-0 run to lead 55-38. Methodist responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 55-43. Virginia Wesleyan's defense controlled the rest of the game to seal the 61-48 victory.
