The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team advances to the next round of the 2023 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament after defeating Montclair St. in penalties, tying 2-2 and beating the Red Hawks in penalties 2-1.
Both teams eagerly contested the goal early. Rachel Quigley got action early when she saved a shot on goal in the 5th minute.
In the 10th minute, the Red Hawks scored a goal of a headed pass. This goal put the Red Hawks up 1-0.
The Marlins kept their heads up and answered right back in the 11th minute. Alexis Miller dribbled the ball and played off an excellent pass in front of Shyenne Diaz. Diaz then dribbled into the box with a defender on her and shot a ball into the right side of the net for a Marlins goal. This play put the Marlins back into the game at 1-1.
In the 25th minute, Janessa Lowe shot on goal and then Alexis Miller shot on goal the next minute. Both of which were saved by Red Hawk goalie, Haley Martin.
In the 42nd minute, the Red Hawks took a shot that deflected off of the crossbar and missed.
Rachel Quigley registered six saves on 12 shots in the 1st half. The Marlins shot seven times in the 1st half.
In the 55th minute, the Marlins were awarded a free kick about 10 yards outside of the penalty box. Alexis Miller shot the free kick high toward the goalie. The goalie deflected the ball into the crossbar, the ball deflected back to the goalie's head and went into the back of the net to put the score at 2-1.
In the 62nd minute, the Red Hawks answered right back and scored a goal to make the score 2-2.
In the 74th minute, the Red Hawk's attack forced Rachel Quigley to come out of the box. In doing so the Red Hawks registered a shot that was deflected out by the head of Olivia Braunbeck.
In the 80th minute, Shyenne Diaz registered a shot to the top left and was saved by Red Hawk goalie, Haley Martin.
In overtime, Rachel Quigley saved a line drive shot in the 93rd minute. That was the only time Montclair State shot in the 1st overtime, and the Marlins shot three times.
In the 2nd period of OT, neither team scored pushing the game into penalty kick shootouts at 2-2.
The Red Hawks shot first in penalty kicks and both goal keepers were lights out making seven total saves. Rachel Quigley made four saves and Haley Martin made three saves in penalties. The Marlins went on to win 2-1 to win to move on in the NCAA Tournament.
The Marlins advanced to the next round of the NCAA Division III tournament. They will host Johns Hopkins University tomorrow, November 12th at 1:00 PM.
