Women's Soccer Advance to NCAA Sweet Sixteen

Virginia Wesleyan University faced off against Johns Hopkins University for the NCAA Regional Championship. The Marlins will advance to the Sweet Sixteen after securing a 2-1 victory versus the Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins began with a commanding start on offense, as they controlled a majority of the possession in the first 15 minutes of play.

In the 16th minute, the Blue Jays registered their third shot of the game. Rachel Quigley dove low and saved it, resulting in her first save of the game.

In the 27th minute, Shyenne Diaz registered the only shot of the half for the Marlins.

In the first half, Rachel Quigley held strong in goal and registered three saves on seven shots, including one that collided off the right woodwork in the final minute of the half.

In the 61st minute, the Blue Jays goalkeeper was awarded a goal kick and placed an air ball to her midfielder. Alexis Miller stepped in front of the pass, juked the defender, and shot a long-range ball that sailed past the goalkeeper's gloves and into the goal to put VWU up 1-0.

In the 67th minute, Breacain McClenahan was in the penalty box and received a cross from Cailey Johnson. McClenahan dribbled into multiple defenders and fought for the ball in traffic a scrum for the ball broke out and McClenahan poked it towards Shyenne Diaz who tapped the ball into the open net to go up 2-0 on Johns Hopkins. 

In the 71st minute, the Blue Jays scored to make the score 2-1.

The Marlins were able to hold the Blue Jays out of the net for the rest of the game through strong defensive efforts from Sam CrawfordRachel WilsonOlivia BraunbeckStephanie KoblishLexi Soteriou, and Victoria Gonzalez.

The Marlins registered eight shots in the second half, three of which were on goal. The Blue Jays registered five and two were on goal.

Virginia Wesleyan will advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Opponent and game time are to be determined.
