The No. 1 Marlins defeated the No. 8 Hornets of Shenandoah University 1-0 in the ODAC Quarterfinals and now advance to the ODAC semifinals against Bridgewater College.
The match started closely contested by both sides. Neither team registered a shot until the 13th minute when
Shyenne Diaz and
Adrianna Gunther registered shots off-target.
In the 31st minute,
Cailey Johnson had a quick shot on attack which hit the upper woodwork.
In the 32nd minute,
Alaina Alston was tripped inside the box by the Hornet's goalkeeper and was awarded a penalty kick. Alston ultimately missed the penalty shot due to a great save by the Hornet's goalie.
In the first half, the Marlins registered nine shots respectfully and the Hornets registered four. The Marlins also had four corner kicks in the first half.
The Marlins defense held together well for most of the game but the Hornets had multiple chances to score in the second half respectfully.
In the 87th minute,
Alexis Miller turned around and angled a beautiful cross to forward
Shyenne Diaz. Diaz then laid the ball off to first-year
Janessa Lowe who finished the ball into the back of the net to win the Marlins the Quarterfinals 1-0 in the final minutes.
Rachel Quigley had three key saves for the Marlins on nine shots and got the Marlins the shutout.
The Marlins will host Bridgewater College on November 3rd, in the ODAC Semifinals.
