The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team (24-5, 11-0 ODAC) was defeated by Johns Hopkins 3-1 but bounced back in game two winning 3-0 against Swarthmore.
Game One:
The Marlins jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the set, but the Blue Jays countered with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 8-7. The teams traded points until Johns Hopkins went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-19 lead over Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins responded with a 3-0 run to retake the lead, but the Blue Jays outscored VWU 4-1 to win the set 25-23.
In the second set, the Marlins built a narrow 6-4 lead, the Blue Jays quickly went on a 3-0 run to lead 7-6. Virginia Wesleyan fought back with a 5-0 run to lead 11-7, but Johns Hopkins responded with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 12-11. VWU went on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 19-14, the Blue Jays countered with a 4-0 run to bring the score to 21-20. The Marlins outscored Johns Hopkins 4-3 to win set two 25-23.
The third set was tightly contested, with eight ties at the start of the set, which saw both teams tied at 11-11. The Blue Jays offense rallied to go on a 5-1 run and lead 16-12. The Marlins went on a 3-1 run but Johns Hopkins responded with a 4-0 to lead 21-15. The Blue Jays took a 2-1 set lead winning 25-19.
VWU built a 9-6 lead to start the set, however, the Blue Jays went on a 3-0 run that tied the game at 9-9. The two teams traded points and tied five more times until Johns Hopkins went on a 9-2 run to lead 23-16, and went on to seal the win at 25-17.
Hannah Smith led the team with 11 kills, a .167 hitting percentage, 10 digs, three block assists, three service aces, and one assist,
Abigail Mahoney had 11 kills, with a .300 hitting percentage, and two block assists, and
Kate Ayre registered nine kills, with a .154 hitting percentage, and four block assists.
Haley Sutton recorded a team-high 22 assists, five digs, two service aces, and one kill, and teammate
Cara Caruso led the team with 14 digs and two assists.
Game Two:
The Marlins came out strong, looking to bounce back after their defeat to Johns Hopkins and built a 12-5 lead in set one against Swarthmore. Swarthmore went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 13-10 and chipped away further to bring the score to 16-14. Virginia Wesleyan went on a torrid run outscoring the Garnets 9-3 to win the set 25-17.
Again Virginia Wesleyan started strong jumping out to a 13-7 lead, but Swarthmore countered with a 6-0 run to tie the set at 13-13. However, the Marlins responded with a 4-0 run to lead 17-13. The Garnets chipped away at the Marlins' lead and brought the score to 19-18, but VWU went on a 6-0 run to win the set 25-18.
Swarthmore started the third set strong jumping out to a 10-5 lead and led by as many as 13-7. The Marlins then went on an 11-3 run to take an 18-16 lead and continued to dominate and won the third set 25-18.
Hannah Smith led the offense with 12 kills, a .458 hitting percentage, eight digs, one solo block, one block assist, and three service aces,
Emma Claytor tallied 12 kills, with a .706 hitting percentage, three digs, three block assists, and one service ace, and Jenna Water recorded eight kills, with a .333 hitting percentage, five digs, and one block assist.
Haley Sutton had 22 assists, four digs, and two service aces, and
Cara Caruso had 16 digs and three assists.
