Women's Volleyball Split in Tri-Match at No. 22 Mary Washington

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team (22-3, 10-0 ODAC) won the first match against St. Lawrence University 3-0 but fell to No. 22 Mary Washington 3-0 in game two. 

Game One:
The Marlins built an early 7-1 lead to begin the match. After the Saints went on a 2-1 run, Virginia Wesleyan rallied with a 7-1 run to take a 15-4 lead. St. Lawrence fought back with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 17-9, but the Marlins outscored the Saints 8-3 to win the first set 25-12. 

Virginia Wesleyan kept the momentum and took a 6-3 lead, but St. Lawrence fought back going on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 9-8. The Marlins countered with a 6-1 run to lead 17-10, and after dropping two points to the Saints went on a 4-1 run to lead 21-13. The Saints responded with a 4-0 run to bring the score to 21-17, but the Marlins outscored St. Lawrence 4-2 and won the second set 25-19. 

In the third set, St. Lawrence fought hard had held an early 5-4 lead, but Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 9-2 run to take a 14-6 lead. The Saints went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead down to 15-12. VWU's offense stayed strong and outscored the Saints 10-4 to win the third set 25-16.  

Abigail Mahoney led the offense with 10 kills, with a .476 hitting percentage and one dig, Emma Claytor had five kills, with a .167 hitting percentage, 11 digs, two solo blocks, one bloc, assist, and one service ace, and Hannah Smith recorded eight kills, with a .429 hitting percentage, 13 digs, and one assist. 

Haley Sutton led the team with 24 assists, had seven digs, and two service aces, and libero Cara Caruso recorded 17 digs, one kill, and one assist. 

Game Two:
The Eagles jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Marlins came back with a 4-1 run to tie the game at 9-9. The two teams traded points until the Marlins went on a 3-0 run to take a 16-14 lead midway through the set. However, the Eagles' offense awoke going on an 11-1 run to win the set 25-17.

The Eagles jumped out to an 11-5 lead in set two, but the Marlins chipped away at the Mary Washington lead and a 3-0 brought them within striking distance at 17-12. The Eagles went on a 5-0 run to lead 22-12, but the Marlins countered with a 4-0 run to bring the score to 22-16. Mary Washington went on to win 25-17. 

In the third set, the Eagles took an early 5-3 lead, but VWU came back to take a 10-9 lead. Mary Washington countered with a 5-2 run to lead 14-12. The Marlins went on a 5-2 run to retake the lead at 16-15, but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run and went on to win the set 25-18. 

Emma Claytor led the Marlins with nine kills, a .421 hitting percentage, eight digs, and one service ace and Hannah Smith tallied nine kills with a .160 hitting percentage, 11 digs, and one service ace.
