No. 14 Marlins softball shuts out Ferrum Panthers 7-0 in opening round of ODAC Championship

SALEM, Virginia - The No. 14 ranked, third seeded Virginia Wesleyan softball team swept the Panthers of Ferrum College 7-0 in the opening round of the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Softball Tournament at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA. The Marlins advance to game eight, tonight at 7 PM against the No. 13, second-seeded Randolph-Macon College.

INSIDE THE SCORE
After an opening inning where neither team scored, the Marlins struck with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. An Ariana Rolle single scored Mackenzie Myers putting runners on the corners. On the next play, Rolle stole second and Haleigh Settle scored on an error by the short stop to give VWU a 2-0 lead. 

The next two innings went by without either team scoring, but in the bottom of the fifth inning the Marlins added four runs to go up 6-0. After Rolle was caught stealing at second, Maria Weddle walked and was batted in by Julia Sinnett, who tripled to left center field for the first run. Caitlin Myers came to the plate next and she also hit a triple, this one to the far right corner of the field, to score Sinnett. C. Myers was driven in by Karlee Fretz who hit a sac fly to center field, while Mackenzie Myers walked to reach base. M. Myers she came home on the third triple of the inning off Madison Hudson's bat to left center field.

VWU scored its last and final run in the bottom of the sixth when Sinnett singled to left field to score Krissy D'Arco putting the score at 7-0. 

Emily Seale collected the win (16-4) threw five innings giving up no runs and no hits while fanning five. Julia Piotrowski threw the final two innings and helped complete the combined no-hitter. 

VWU's shut out win is payback for the two wins that Ferrum got over the Marlins earlier in the season. 


UP NEXT
The Marlins return to the field again tonight at 7 PM when they face the No. 13, second-seeded Yellow Jackets in game eight of the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex.
