Marlins baseball swept Panthers of Ferrum in Saturday doubleheader

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College their doubleheader at Perry Field in TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA on a breezy Saturday afternoon. The Marlins claimed a pair of wins 10-7 and 8-6 in the two games.

GAME RUNDOWN
The Marlins found the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Trent Hanchey scored on a double by Connor Hall to center field for the first run, while Hall followed suit, coming home on a wild pitch for the second. 

VWU added a third run in the bottom of the second as Hanchey hit a single through the left side that drove in Sam Kasprow. 

Ferrum pulled within one, 3-2, in the top of the third as a single down the right field line scored a pair of runners. 

Neither team was able to move the score in their direction over the next three innings despite VWU leaving four runners on base while FC left one on. 

The Marlins broke the scoreless drought in the bottom of the seventh when they added four runs to their stat line taking a 7-2 lead. The first run was scored by Hall who came in on a sac fly to right from Garrett Lyons. A single to center by Kasprow drove in Ronaldo Del Duca. Miles Christian scored on a single by Ryan Ballard, while Kasprow came in off a single by Jaelen Hines.

The Panthers came back in the top of the eighth to knot the score at seven all, however, the Marlins answered with three in the bottom half of the inning to take the 10-7 lead which was just enough to win the game. A single by Christian through the left side scored Hall and Matt Sinko, while a single by Kasprow drove in Del Duca for the final run. 

Robert Cook threw 7.2 innings giving up seven runs on three hits while striking out 12 batters and walking seven. Ian Brady threw a third of an inning and collected the win, while Ryan Mason threw the top of the ninth to collect the save.

Jaelen Hines started game two off with a bang hitting a solo home run over the center field wall to put the Marlins on the board. Ronaldo Del Duca

The Marlins held the Panthers off the board in the top of the second while adding five runs off three home runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-0 lead. Hitting bombs over the wall were Garrett Lyons, Trent Hanchey, and Jake Ness. Hanchey's and Ness's runs respectively scored Sam Kasprow and Connor Hall

Ferrum broke onto the score board in the top of the third inning with four runs putting the score at 7-4. In the top of the fourth a Panther hit a solo home run over the right field wall pulling within two runs, 7-5. 

Lyons scored the Marlins last run in the top of the fifth inning has he hit a home run down the left field line giving VWU a three run lead, 8-5. 

Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh inning, while Ferrum scored one run in the top of the fifth that put the score at 8-6. The Marlins held on to keep the Panthers at bay and win game two 8-6 and claim the series over Ferrum. 

CJ Morris (W, 4-2) threw all nine innings giving up six runs on nine hits. He struck out seen batters while walking three.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action again on Tuesday when they travel to ODAC foe Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
