Three home runs aid Marlins in 8-2 win over Hawks of SUNY New Paltz

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan collected an 8-2 victory over the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz in a Friday afternoon baseball matinee at Kenneth R. Perry Field in TowneBank Park.

GAME RUNDOWN
SUNY New Paltz recorded the lead off score with a single run in the top of the first inning of a double to left center field. Virginia Wesleyan countered in the bottom half of the inning with a two RBI homer over the right field fence by Trent Hanchey giving VWU a 2-1 lead. 

The next three innings were uneventful as neither team found a run, but the Marlins recorded a single run in the bottom of the fifth off a homerun by Jake Ness giving VWU a two run advantage, 3-1.

SUNY answered with a run in the top of the six, while Marlins pitcher CJ Morris worked his way out of a bases loaded situation to keep the Marlins in the lead, 3-2. 

VWU's bats sprang to life in the bottom of the seventh inning when the home team sent five runners across home plate. Garrett Lyons started the inning off with a solo home run to left center. Matt Sinko crossed home on a bases loaded single by Sam Kasprow for th second run of the inning. Connor Hall was the next to cross home plate as Ronaldo Del Duca was walked with the bases loaded. The final two runs of Kasprow and Jaelen Hines crossed the plate following a single to deep right field by Hanchey that scored the pair of RBI. 

The Marlins held the Hawks scoreless in the top of the eighth and ninth to claim their second home win of the season and fourth overall.

  • Trent Hanchey recorded four RBI on a pair hits while scoring one run in four plate appearances. 
  • Hanchey, Garrett Lyons, and Jake Ness each recorded a home run in the game.
  • CJ Morris (W: 1-1) collected the win throwing six innings during which he struck out six batters while only walking two, and gave up just two runs on four hits.
  • Ian Brady collected his third save of the season coming in at the top of the seventh when the Marlins led by just two runs, 4-2. He struck out four while giving up just two hits.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Bombers of Ithaca College, the alma mater of Head Coach Chris Francis. First pitch is slated for 2:30 PM at TowneBank Park.
