Marlins hold off Hornets claiming a 67-62 win in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg 67-62 in Lynchburg, VA, on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season.

INSIDE THE SCORE
Lynchburg took the early lead opening the game on a 6-2 run. The Marlins responded on an 8-2 run taking a 10-8 lead following a three pointer by Jordan Crump with 15:08 on the clock. The teams evened up the score at 10 and 12 all before the Hornets opened a four point lead, 18-14, but an 8-0 run by the Marlins gave VWU a 22-18 lead with 6:13 on the clock. UL battled back to tie the score at 26 all with 2:51 remaining until halftime, and the teams went back and forth with the score knotting up at 28 and 30 all. A Crump three pointer put VWU ahead 33-30 but a buzzer beater layup by Lynchburg put the difference at just one point, 33-32, as the teams went into the halftime break.

The Hornets came out of halftime to take a 34-33 lead but the Marlins came back to take a 40-34 lead following a 7-0 run. VWU opened up a 10-point lead, 50-40, after a 10-6 run that was capped by a Tim Fisher free throw with 10:40 remaining in the second half. Virginia Wesleyan maintained a double-digit lead over the next seven minutes holding a 60-50 lead at the three minute mark courtesy of a Miles Wallace three pointer. The Hornets cut the Marlins lead to four points, 62-58, with 44 seconds on the clock. VWU added five more points to their total off of free throws, while Lynchburg added four more pushing the final score up to 67-62 for a Virginia Wesleyan win. 

MARLIN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tim Fisher with 18 points while Jordan Crump added 17 of his own. Corey Pelham tallied 15 points as the last Marlin in double-digits.

HORNETS LEADERS
The Hornets were led by Israel Lockamy with 19 points, while Miles Taylor added 14. Dow Dunton tallied 10 points and lead all players with 18 rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Marlins return to the court this Thursday for the ODAC Quarterfinal round. No. 3 seeded VWU will face the No. 6 seeded Hornets for the third time this season at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA, to determine who will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 26. Tip off between the Marlins and Hornets is set for 8 PM.
