Marlins close out the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic with 13-3 win over Mt. St. Joseph

MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team closed out the Huntingdon College Firehouse Classic with a 13-3 seven inning victory over the Lions of Mount Saint Joseph University.

GAME RUNDOWN
The game got off to a slow start as neither team found a run in the opening inning, however, the Lions scored a single run in the top of the second inning to go up 1-0. After a scoreless third inning, the Marlins put up 10 runs over two innings to go ahead 10-1 at the bottom of the fifth inning. 

VWU scored three runs in the fourth inning. Two runs were driven in by a Miles Christian single to right field sending Garrett Lyons and Connor Hall across home plate. Christian later came home following an error by the third baseman during a Thomas Crandall at-bat. 

The Marlins added seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with Jake Ness coming home off a single from Matt Sinko. Lyons came home for the second time following a single by Hall putting the score at 5-1. Sinko scored on a fielder's choice at-bat for Christian, while Hall crossed home on another fielder's choice, this off the bat of Crandall. During Ness' second at bat of the inning, the outfielder singled to the short stop and advanced to third following an error on the throw that cleared the loaded bases for three more Marlin runs from Hanchey, Crandall, and Hines driving VWU's lead to 10-1.

Mt. St. Joseph put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning climbing back within seven, 10-3, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with three more in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 10 run advantage.A Hines single to center field drove home Hanchey and Christian for a pair of RBI, while Hines later followed his teammates home on a Ness infield single. The Marlins held the Lions off the board in the top of the seventh to secure their ten-run 13-3 victory. 

KEY STATS

  • Jaelen Hines recorded a pair of RBI and runs on one hit in four plate appearances. 
  • Garrett Lyons scored twice off two hits, both of which were doubles, in his three at-bats.
  • Connor Hall, Trent Hanchey, and Miles Christian joined Hines and Garrett with two runs scored in the contest. 
  • Robert Cook (W: 2-0) earned the win throwing six innings during which he struck out 13 of 27 batter faced, only walked four, and gave up just three runs on three hits.
