SALEM, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins women's soccer team's run to the NCAA National Championship game came to an end on Friday, December 2 as the No. 4 Spartans of Case Western Reserve University upended the Marlins 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans (20-0-1) controlled the pace of the opening half of action as the CWRU offense managed to get 10 shots off in the opening half of action. The Marlins managed five shots in the first 45 minutes of play including three corner kicks, each of which resulted in a shot on goal that was ultimately saved by the Spartan keeper. VWU's keeper Rachel Quigley made three stops while allowing two goals on a chilly 45-degree evening at Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College. CWRU found a goal in the 16th minute to get on the scoreboard and added a second goal in the 40th taking a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Case Western Reserve added its third and final goal in the 62nd minute. Despite taking five shots in the second half, the Marlins could not find the back of the net as Virginia Wesleyan fell 3-0 in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer semifinal match.
KEY STATS
The Spartans out shot the Marlins 22-10, however, VWU did manage four shots on goal from Emma Acanfora, Olivia Bryant, Alex Agee, and Shyenne Diaz. Junior keeper Rachel Quigley (17-3-4) made six saves on nine shots on goal.
The 2022 season was a special year as the Marlins made just their second trip in program history to the NCAA Women's Soccer Final Four, the last being in 2006, the year VWU won its first ODAC Championship Title. On the road to the Final Four, unranked Virginia Wesleyan defeated No. 23 Rowan, No. 13 Wisconsin-La Crosse, and No. 3 Christopher Newport.
