VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a win over the Royals of Regent University at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins opened the game on a 7-0 run throughout the opening four and a half minutes. Regent scored four points that put the score at 9-4, but Virginia Wesleyan went on an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 17-4 with under 11 to play in the opening half. The Royals broke up the Marlins run with a 4-3 stint that saw the score sit at 20-8 with 9:47 remaining. VWU went on another 8-0 over a three-minute window opening up a 20-point lead, 28-8. The Marlins held the Royals to just eight points in the remaining six minutes of the opening half while scoring 11 of their own to lead 39-16 at the halftime break.
Virginia Wesleyan in the second half continued to apply pressure to Regent opening up a 30-point advantage by the 12-minute mark after going on an 18-11 run. The Royals came as close as 21 points, 68-47, with four and a half remaining, but the Marlins managed to hold the Royals at bay and win their season opener 76-51.
KEY STATS
- Anthony Jackson led the Marlins offense with 17 points behind five three-pointers.
- Omari DeVeaux added 16 points shooting 7-for-10 from the field. and Miles Wallace rounded out the top scorers with 10 points after scoring three treys.
- Amari Moorer led the defensive boards with 10 rebounds with Jordan Crump tallying five, and Wallace and DeVeaux both ading four apiece.

The Marlins host a trio of teams this weekend for the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Coming to compete this weekend are Colby-Sawyer College, St. John's Fisher University, and Pfeiffer University. Action kicks off Friday evening at 5 PM between the Marlins and Chargers, while the Cardinals and Falcons follow at 7 PM. The four teams will them play on Saturday at 1 and 3 PM with the non-winning teams playing first.
