LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team won both matches on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, VA. The Marlins took both the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg and the Cougars of Averett University to four sets each.

MATCH RECAP
The teams sat tied three-three through the first six serves but the Marlins went on a 6-1 run to lead 9-4 as Lynchburg called a timeout. UL climbed back within two points, 9-7, before VWU went on an 8-0 rally taking a 10-point lead 17-7 forcing another Lynchburg timeout. After giving up two points to the Hornets, the Marlins went on an 8-1 run taking the opening set 25-10.
Lynchburg opened set two on an 8-4 run but Virginia Wesleyan countered coming back to take an 11-10 lead forcing a UL timeout. The Hornets took a 14-12 lead after coming out of the timeout but the Marlins knotted the score at 14 all before Lynchburg went on an 11-8 run closing out the set and taking the 25-20 win.
VWU wasted no time in set three as they came out of the gate on an 8-2 run. The Marlins took an 11-point lead, 17-6, forcing UL to take his second timeout. The Hornets scored three in a row but the Marlins closed out the set on 7-4 run to take the set 25-13 and go up 2-1 in the match.
Lynchburg came out in set four taking the early 6-2 lead forcing a Virginia Wesleyan timeout. VWU came out of the break to go on a 9-1 rally taking an 11-7 lead that forced UL into a timeout. Lynchburg knotted the score first at 13 all, and the teams traded points back and forth with the score tying six more times, last tie at 23 all, before the Marlins scored two in a row to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

The Marlins opened the set against Averett on a 7-1 run. After a pair of Cougar points, Virginia Wesleyan scored four more points taking an 11-3 lead. AU climbed within four points, 14-10, however, VWU answered by going on an 8-1 rally taking a 22-11 lead.Averett scored five more points but the Marlins lead was too great and VWU took the opening set 25-16.
After VWU opened set two on a 5-3 run, AU came back taking a 7-5 lead. The Marlins knotted the score at seven all, but a Cougars went on a 7-1 run taking a 14-8 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan pulled within three but that was the closest they came the rest of set two as Averett closed out the set on an 11-7 run winning set two 25-18.
Virginia Wesleyan opened set three on a 5-0 run. Averett responded with a 6-2 rn to trail 7-6, before VWU scored four straight to lead 11-6. The Cougars pulled within three, 13-10, but the Marlins closed out set three on a 12-2 rally winning 25-12 and going up 2-1 in the match.
VWU scored 14 of the first 15 points that started the fourth set. The Marlins held a 20-4 lead after three consecutive kills, but Averett went on an 8-3 run pulling within 11 points, however, VWU put down the last two points to win set four 25-12 and the match 3-1.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they travel up to Maryland to take on the Seahawks from Saint Mary's College of Maryland. First serve is set for 7 PM.
