Marlins Baseball drops marathon single to Lynchburg

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team fell in 12 innings to the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday afternoon at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • After a scoreless first inning for both teams the Marlins bats came to life in the bottom of the second as VWU batted home five runs.
  • Jaelen Hines drove in the first two runs, Connor Hall and Samuel Kasprow, on a triple to left center field. 
  • A ground out by Ryan Ballard scored Hines for the third run.
  • Miles Christian came home after a failed pickoff attempt by UL's pitcher to tag Dylan Gentry put at first went high and Gentry was the last to come home after Tyriq Campbell singled to right field to end the scoring.
  • Lynchburg used the next four innings to knot the score at five runs each with a single run in the top of the third and a pair of runs in the top fifth and sixth innings. 
  • The Marlins reclaimed the lead, 7-5, in the bottom of the sixth with Hines and Ballard crossing home plate.
  • The Hornets again tied the score after putting a pair of runs on the board in the top of the seventh putting the score at seven all.
  • Neither team found a run in the remaining two and a half innings forcing extra innings to be played. after going scoreless in the tenth and eleventh, the Hornets put four runs up in the top of the twelfth inning taking their first lead of the game 11-7.
  • VWU could not find a response in the bottom half of the inning and ultimately fell in the end.
KEY STATS
  • Jaelen Hines led the team with two RBI and two runs on two hits in six at-bats. 
  • Miles Christian led the team with three hits while scoring once and driving in an RBI.
  • Eight Marlin pitcher took to the mound with Tommy O'Dell and Robert Cook each putting in four innings worth of work. O'Dell struckout three in his first college start, while Cook also struckout three. 
  • Jay Crusemire threw a pair of innings giving up two runs on two hits while striking out three.
  • Brycen Seymore (L: 0-2) took the loss giving up the four Lynchburg runs in the twelfth inning.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, April 10, when they travel to take on the Panthers of Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA. First pitch of game one is set for 2 PM.
