Baseball sweeps Ferrum College in marathon doubleheader

FERRUM, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team swept the Panthers of Ferrum College in a marathon day of baseball on Sunday afternoon in Ferrum, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Marlins fell behind early as Ferrum put a single run on the board in the bottom of the first inning and then added three more in the bottom of the second to lead 4-0 in the top of the third.
  • After a scoreless third inning the Marlins found a solo run in the top of the fourth as Matt Dagostino scored on a Connor Hall groundout putting the score at 4-1.
  • Ferrum added a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth reclaiming their four run lead, 5-1.
  • Jaelen Hines scored in the top of the seventh on a Ryan Ballad groundout and in the top of the eighth the Marlins knotted the score at five runs each as Dagostino homered over the left field wall scoring Dylan Gentry and Jake Ness on the play. 
  • Neither team could bat another run in during the ninth inning and forced extra innings. 
  • The two squads battled it out through six extra innings, 15th frame, and neither team let the other score, however in the top of the 16th inning, the Marlins put three runs on the board to break the tie and give VWU an 8-5 lead. 
  • VWU's scores came from Dagostino and Hines who scored off a Matt Sinko single to the shortstop and Sinko followed his teammates home on a Miles Christian single to center field. 
  • The Marlins held the Panthers off the board despite a lead off double to right field to win the marathon game 8-5. 
KEY STATS
  • Matt Dagostino led the Marlins with three RBI off his homerun hit. Dagostino also recorded three runs on five hits in his seven at-bats. 
  • Jaelen Hines added two runs on four hits while Miles Christian added three this and an RBI. 
  • Robert Cook threw six innings for the Marlins giving up five runs on eight hits while fanning six. 
  • Adam Brooks (W: 1-2) came in late in the game to throw three and a third innings during which he gave up three hits and struckout one.

  • The Marlins started game two by batting in a single run in the top of the first as Jake Ness came home on a double by Matt Sinko to right center field. 
  • The Panthers responded scoring a solo run in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at one all. 
  • In the top of the second Matt Dagostino came home on a passed ball after reaching base on a single through the left side.
  • The Marlins added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the third as Sinko homered over the left field wall sending Jaelen Hines home on the play increasing VWU's lead to 4-1. 
  • Ferrum found a second run in the bottom of the fifth putting the score a 4-2, but VWU put nine runs up over the next two innings to go ahead 13-2. 
  • Three runs were scored in the top of the six with Dagostino crossing home first after reaching on a double. Dagostino scored on an error during Miles Christian's at-bat. Dylan Gentry drove in the next run on a double down the left line to send Chase James across home plate. The final run came as Christian scored on a Jake Ness double to left.
  • The other six of the nine runs came in the top of the seventh and began with James driving home Samuel Kasprow and Dagostino on a double to right.
  • James scored a few plays later on a fielders choice during Jake Ness' at-bat. Miles Christian and Ness scored after Jaelen Hines tripled to right center four runs four and five of the inning. 
  • Hines later came home on a wild pitch for the final run of the inning that put VWU up 13-2.
  • Ferrum closed the Virginia Wesleyan lead to seven after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh putting the score at 13-6.
  • VWU added one last run in the top of the ninth as Christian scored on a fielders choice on Ness' at-bat while Ferrum added three runs closing the spread to five, 14-9, and missed an opportunity to close the gap even further as the Panthers had the bases loaded but the final batter flew out to centerfield.
