Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse falls in road contest at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell to the Eagles of Bridgewater College on Wednesday evening in conference action in Bridgewater, VA.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Bridgewater got things started with four consecutive goals before Virginia Wesleyan answered with four goals of its own knotting the score at four all. VWU's four goals came from four different athletes including Nathan Sheirburn, Mark Sprague, Cole Maguire, and Joey Rayman. BC added on more goal before the end of the first quarter to lead 5-4 heading into the next 15 minute frame. 

The Eagles again got four goals off to start the quarter taking a 9-4 lead with 10 and a half to play. Maguire and Sprague each scored their second goals of the game to cut the BC lead to three, 9-6, but Bridgewater closed out the half with six unanswered goals to lead 15-6 at the break.

BC took a 12 goal lead, 18-6, after opening the third with three goals before Maguire scored his third goal of the contest with 2:48 left in the third. BC answered 20 seconds later with the last goal of the third quarter taking a 19-7 lead into the final 15 minute frame. 

The Marlins scored five goals in the final 15 minutes while giving up three to the Eagles with the final score sitting at 22-12 in BC's favor. VWU's five goals came from Chris Lindemeyer, Jack Butcher, two from Sprague, and one from Sheirburn.

KEY STATS

  • Mark Sprague led the Marlins with four goals and two assists in VWU's return to action. 
  • Cole Maguire added his wn hattrick while Nathan Sheirburn tallied two goals.
  • Kyle Leeming (L: 0-3, 0-1) played all 60 minutes in goal giving up 22 goals while also making 17 saves.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, April 24, when they host No. 21 Washington & Lee University at Birdsong Field. First draw between the Generals and Marlins is set for 1 PM.
