Baseball drops doubleheader against the Maroons of Roanoke College

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team dropped both games in the doubleheader against the Maroons of Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. Prior to game one 13 seniors were honored for their time playing for VWU Dylan Gentry, Derek Ringer, Isaac Guzman, Nick Price, Tyriq Campbell, James Wyatt, Doug Avery, Matt Dagostino, Adam Brooks, Zach Masalski, Jay Crusemire, Duncan Newman and Nick Mundy.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The Maroons started the scoring with three runs off of back to back home runs over the left field wall to take the early 3-0 lead but the Marlins responded in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to one run, 3-2. Dylan Gentry scored on a Matt Dagostino single while Dagostino crossed home plate off a Tyriq Campbell double down the right field line.
  • RC added a single run in the second inning increasing its lead to 4-2 and added a fifth run in the top of the fifth to go up 5-2. 
  • VWU answered in the bottom of the fifth with a single and another single run in the bottom sixth to pull within one again trailing 5-4. Jake Ness scored the third run following a sac fly from Connor Hall in the fifth and Nick Price came home in the sixth following a sac fly by Ness. 
  • Roanoke pulled away in the top of the seventh scoring four runs to go up 9-4 while Virginia Wesleyan could not bat runners around to answer dropping the first game.
KEY STATS
  • Tyriq Campbell led the team with a pair of hits and an RBI on four at-bats.
  • Jay Crusemire threw six innings giving up eight runs on 11 hits while striking out six batters. 
  • Doug Avery who came in relief for two innings struck out three while giving up the ninth run on two hits.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Game two started slower than the first as neither team found its first run until the second inning when the Maroons plated a run.
  • Roanoke increased its lead to 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning as seven runs crossed home plate for the visiting squad. 
  • VWU found a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to hold off the shutout as Dylan Gentry and Jaelen Hines scored for the Marlins following back to back singles, one each from Matt Sinko and Matt Dagostino
  • Virginia Wesleyan added two more to pull within four, 8-4, of Roanoke in the bottom eighth as a Dagostino single to right field scored Hines and Sinko. 
  • The Marlins added their last run in the bottom of the ninth as a Gentry single up the middle scored Derek Ringer putting the final score at 8-5 in favor of the Maroons. 

KEY STATS

  • Matt Dagostino recorded three RBI on two hits in his four at-bats.
  • Jaelen Hines scored twice during the game while laying down two hits on four at-bats.
  • Robert Cook took the loss throwing five and two-thirds innings giving up all eight runs on six hits and striking out just three batters.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, April 21, when they travel to Lynchburg, VA to take on the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg. First pitch of the single game is set for 3 PM.
