NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team fell to the cross bay rivals the Captains of Christopher Newport University 12-4 on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, VA. The Marlins are now 0-6 on the season while the Captains are 3-1.
INSIDE THE SCORE
After a scoreless first inning for both teams CNU managed to put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second sending three runners home including a double that drove in one RBI and a bases clearing single to center field to drive in the other two.
The Captains added a fourth run in the bottom of the third on a throwing error by the second baseman that scored the run increasing CNU's lead to 4-0.
The Marlins made some noise in the top of the fourth as Tyriq Campbell reached base on balls and Connor Hall reached on a single bunt to the pitcher. After hall stole second, Matt Culbert hit a single up the middle that scored Campbell (3rd) and Hall (2nd) as VWU cut CNU's lead to two, 4-2.
Christopher Newport added three runs in the bottom of the fourth as two runs crossed on a double to right field and the third came in on a fielding error by the second baseman giving CNU the 7-2 lead.
The Marlins again added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to pull within three, 7-4, as a Campbell single up the middle score Matt Dagostino and Miles Christian.
The VWU defense kept CNU from scoring in the fifth and six innings but gave up a single run in the bottom of the seventh and the four more in the bottom of the eighth as the Captains secured their win 12-4.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tyriq Campbell with one run on one hit with two RBI in two at-bats. Matt Culbert added the other two RBI while recording one hit in three at-bats. Robert Cook (L: 0-2) threw 3.1 innings giving up five runs on two hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT LEADERS
The Captains were led by Eric O'Brien with two runs on three this in four at-bats and three RBI. Jonathan Fisher and Michael Martorano each added a pair of RBI in their at-bats while also each recording two hits. Jay Cassady started the game for the Captains on the mound and threw four innings to give up two runs on three hits and struckout eight batters. Matt Gaither (W: 1-0) earns the win after throwing two innings and striking out four.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday March 10th, when they host the Salisbury Sea Gulls for the 2021 home opener. First pitch is slated for 2 PM at Kenneth Perry Field at TowneBank Park.
