Marlins Baseball splits doubleheader against Bridgewater

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team split their two game series against the Eagles of Bridgewater College in an ODAC doubleheader at Kenneth Perry Field in TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Neither team found the scoreboard in the opening inning however the Eagles broke through in the top of the second putting a trio of runs on the board to lead the Marlins.
  • Both teams were kept scoreless during their next three at-bats before the Marlins added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to hold off the shutout.
  • VWU's first run was scored by Samuel Kasprow as he was driven in off a Jake Ness double to right field. Dylan Gentry came home on the next play as Chris Harrell flew out to centerfield.
  • The Marlins took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after putting up three runs to go ahead 5-3. A Ness triple to right center field scored Kasprow and Gentry and Ness scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning.
  • Bridgewater reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh adding five runs to their total to go ahead 8-5 and ensured their win with two more runs in the top of the ninth putting the final tallied at 10-5.

KEY STATS

  • Jake Ness was a homerun away from completing the cycle as he recorded an RBI double and 2 RBI triple as well as three singles in the game. 
  • Dylan Gentry scored twice in the on two hits in five at-bats and Samuel Kasprow also scored twice in three at-bats.
  • Jay Crusemire threw 6.2 innings giving up five runs on six hits while striking out eight of 28 batters faced.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Bridgewater took the early lead as the Eagles put a solo run on the board to go ahead 1-0.
  • Neither team scored in the next seven innings despite the Marlins leaving four on base and the Eagles left five stranded. 
  • The Marlins found some life in the eighth inning as VWU put seven runs on the board taking a 7-1 lead which ultimately was the final score.
  • Thomas Crandell scored during Dylan Gentry's at-bat as Gentry reached base on a single to the shortstop. 
  • Two batters latter, Braxton Downum singled to left field that scored Gentry.
  • A short while later, Nick Price came to the plate with the bases loaded and laid down a single to right field that scored two, Jake Ness and Downum, to put VWU ahead 4-1.
  • The last three runs came in on a Matt Culbert triple to right field that scored Chase James and Price with Culbert scoring as well on the overthrow from right field on the attempt to tag him out at third.

KEY STATS

  • Matt Culbert led the Marlins with three RBI on one hit in his lone at-bat. 
  • Nick Price was second with two RBI and a run on two hits, including a double, in four at-bats.
  • Robert Cook (W, 2-2-) threw a complete game giving up one run on five hits while walking two and striking out an impressive 12 batters of 34 faced.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday, March 23, when they host the Eagles of Mary Washington in a single midweek game. First pitch is set for 3 PM at Perry Field.
