Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse falls in road contest at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell to the Eagles of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action in Fredericksburg, VA.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Mary Washington opened he contest with four goals taking the early lead over VWU.
  • Virginia Wesleyan found their first goal five minutes into action as Chris Lindenmeyer connected with the back of the net off a pass from Nathan Sheirburn.
  • UMW added two more goals before Trevor Lalande added the second goal of the game for the Marlins.
  • The Eagles added two more in the first quarter while Lalande found his second score of the day as the Marlins trailed 8-3.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Mary Washington opened the second quarter with another string of goals putting three more on the board to lead 11-3.
  • Lalande and Cole Maguire put in back-to-back goals for Virginia Wesleyan to pull within six, 11-5 wit 8:26 left in the half.
  • Over the next six minutes both teams scored twice with Maguire and Lalande scoring for the Marlins putting the score at 13-7 with 2:18 on the clock.
  • UMW closed out the half with two more goals taking an eight-point lead into the break, 15-7.

THIRD QUARTER

  • The Eagles came out of the break on fire scoring five goals to push the score up to 20-7.
  • Maguire broke up the scoring spree with an unassisted goal with 3L56 left in the third before UMW capped the third with their 21st goal.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Mary Washington put up back-to-back goals taking a 23-8 lead with 12:27 to play. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan responded by putting four more goals on the board the remainder of the quarter while UMW added two, driving the final score up to 25-12.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, March 20, when they host Shenandoah University at Birdsong Field. First draw between the Hornets and Marlins is set for 1 PM.
