LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg 70-44 in the team's first ODAC game of the season. The Marlins move to 0-2, 0-1 while the Hornets are now 1-1, 1-1 on the young season.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with both teams trading baskets back and forth for the opening four minutes of action. VWU had the lead, 9-8, with 5:48 remaining in the first quarter on a
S'Zahria Jones free throw, however, that was the last lead the Marlins held as the Hornets went on a 15-3 rally to close the first quarter with a 23-12 advantage.
The second quarter of the game was controlled by the host Hornets who opened up a 20-point lead, 38-18, by the 3:43 mark. At the halftime horn, VWU trailed UL by 16 points, as the score sat at 41-25 in favor of the Hornets.
After UL scored the opening basket the Marlins went on an 8-0 run to close the Lynchburg lead to 10-points, 43-33, with 6:27 remaining on the clock. VWU's run was halted as Lynchburg put up six points taking a 49-33 lead and secured a double-digit lead the remainder of the quarter as the teams went into the final ten minutes with the Hornets leading 55-40.
VWU hit a drought in the fourth quarter scoring just four points while Lynchburg scored 15 to put the final score at 70-44.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by freshman
S'Zahria Jones with 15 points, a career-high, and seven rebounds as well as two steals.
Adaje Williams was the next highest scoring Marlin with nine points and four rebounds.
LYNCHBURG LEADERS
The Hornets were led by Maggie Quarles with 13 points. She was joined by Lizzie Davis, Abby Oguich, and Kate Kolb who each added 10 points a piece. Oguich led the Hornets with six assists o the evening.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the opening quarter when the Hornets over took the Marlins with the 15-3 run that put the host school up by nine points after the opening frame.

The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins will return to action on Saturday, January 30 when they travel to Salisbury for a non-conference contest against the Sea Gulls at 2 PM.
