Marlins drop non-conference game to the Bears of the US Coast Guard Academy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to the Bears of the Coast Gaurd Academy 16-2 on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 0-5 on the season, while the Bears are now 3-1.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Bears scoring three goals in the first three minutes of action. Tori Manahan stopped the onslaught with an unassisted goal with 23:18 on the clock to put the score at 3-1. USCGA scored the fourth goal at the 16:32 mark before Manahan added the second Marlin goal four minutes later putting the score at 4-2 in the Bears favor. USCGA was in control the remainder of the game closing out the first half with three more goals to lead 7-2 at halftime and then added nine more in the second to win 16-2 over VWU.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Tori Manahan with two unassisted goals on three shots. Mike Hairston (L, 0-1) played all 60 minutes in goal making 15 saves and giving up 16 goals on 31 shots faced.

COAST GUARD LEADERS
The Bears were led by Maddie Rizzuto with three goals and two assists on five shots. Rizzuto also added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Etta Davis, Erin Mullen, and Catarina Goncalves each added two goals apiece to add to the 16 goal total. Rebecca Dolan (W, 3-1) played 30 minutes between the pipes and gave up two goals on three shots faced while making one save. Mary Burdi played the second half and made three stops on three shots faced.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the opening three minutes when USCGA established their control over the game and put three quick goals on the board.

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday, March 10, when they host the Cazenovia women's lacrosse team for an evening contest at Birdsong Field. First draw is set for 7 PM between the Marlins and Wildcats.
