Battling Bishops defeat Marlins in round two of the 'Battle of the Wesleyans'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team fell to their North Carolina counterparts the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan University in a single road game on Tuesday, March 10, at Kenneth R. Perry Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins fell to the Battling Bishops 7-5, to move to 5-9 on the season while NCWU moves to 7-10.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Marlins finding the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Jacob Pilarski scored during a double play during a Connor Hall at-bat. The Battling Bishops responded in the top of the third with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. NWCU added to their lead with a solo run in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the sixth pushing their lead up to 6-1. 

VWU put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning putting the score at 6-3 following a double by Pilarski to right-center field that scored Austin Obenour and Dylan Gentry. The squads were hit with a 35-minute rain delay before action in the seventh could resume.

The Battling Bishops added one more in the top of the seventh and the Marlins responded in kind with a solo run scored in the bottom half as Obenour singled to left field that scored Reese Reid that saw the score move to 7-4 with NWCU leading through seven innings. Virginia Wesleyan scored one last run in the bottom of the eighth as a Reed sac-fly scored Pilarski moving the final score to 7-5 with the Bishops emerging victorious.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Jacob Pilarski with two runs on two hits with two RBI in four at-bats. Zach Lubick (L, 0-1) threw three innings giving up three runs on five hits. 

NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Battling Bishops were led by Moses Vigo who tallied two runs on two hits with one RBI. Brad Pennington added one run on two hits with two RBI in five at-bats. Mike Smith (W, 1-1) pitched six innings giving up three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Friday, March 13, when they host Shenandoah for a pair of conference games. The Marlins and Hornets will meet on Kenneth Perry Field at Townebank Park for a 3 PM first pitch in Virginia Beach, VA.
