Marlins take two of three from No. 26 Bombers of Ithaca in opening home series

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team fell to the No. 26 Bombers of Ithaca College 8-2 in game three of the opening home series of the 2020 season at Kenneth Perry Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 2-5 on the season after taking two on the weekend, while Ithaca is now 1-2 overall.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with three scoreless innings of baseball as both teams played clean efficient baseball through the opening three frames. The Bombers found the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning as a single through the left side scored the runner from third. VWU answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Austin Obenour singled through the left side to get on base and then advanced two bases on a stolen base to second and reached third on throwing error by the catcher on the pickoff opportunity. Obenour was driven home by Jacob Pilarski knotting the score at one run apiece. 

Ithaca found runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings going up 3-1 over Virginia Wesleyan. VWU closed the gap to one run as Josh Hinson crossed the plate on a single from Miles Christian. Hinson came in to pinch run for Zack Burkhart who reached base on a walk and then stole second. 

The Bombers scored another solo run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single through the left side to go up 4-2. Ithaca then sealed the game in the top of the ninth posting four runs on three hits and left two on the bases at the end of their at-bat to win the game 8-2 as they held the Marlins scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Austin Obernour with one run on one hit in his four at-bats. Miles Christian and Jacob Pilarski recorded the two RBI's for the Marlins as each batter tallied a single hit in the game. Josh Hinson plated the second run for VWU after coming in to pinch run in the seventh. 

Robert Cook (L: 0-2) took the loss giving up three runs on four hits in six innings pitched. Cook struck out eight and walked one while facing 24 batters. 

ITHACA LEADERS
The Bombers were led by Garrett Callaghan who went two-of-four on the day with two hits for two runs. Trevor Rumsey also scored two runs on one hit in three at-bats. Matt Smith and Jack Lynch each recorded two RBI for the Bombers.

Tom Cosentino (W: 1-0) got the win throwing eight innings giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, February 26, when they host the Seagulls of Salisbury College in a single midweek home game. First pitch between the Marlins and the Seagulls is scheduled for 2 PM at Kenneth Perry Field at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA.
