Marlins fall 4-3 to Battling Bishops in the Battle of the Wesleyan's

ROCKY MOUNT, North Carolina - The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team traveled to their counterparts in North Carolina playing on the home turf of the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan University in a single road game on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Rocky Mount, NC. The Marlins fell to the Battling Bishops 4-3, to move to 0-2 on the season while NCWU moves to 2-2.

GAME INFORMATION
The game was the second in a string of road contests and the first after the three-game weekend in Demorest, GA., was cut short to just one game due to snow.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Marlins getting on the board first courtesy of a home run over the left-field wall by Austin Obenour. The Marlins held on to their 1-0 lead through five scoreless innings before putting two more on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Connor Hall hit a sacrifice pop-up to the pitcher that scored Zack Clark to put VWU up 2-0. That play was followed by a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by Tyriq Campbell that scored Matt Sinko from third base after advancing to third on a passed ball.

The momentum took a turn in the Battling Bishops favor in the bottom of the seventh as the host team put up four runs on three hits and an error. NCWU's first run scored on an overthrown ball by the shortstop Obenour to the first baseman Campbell. Runs two and three came on a long single to leftfield that earned two RBI for Alec Titmus. The final run of the inning came on a single from Brad Pennington that scored Titmus putting the Bishops up 4-3.

Virginia Wesleyan couldn't find a tying run in the top of the eighth despite Reese Reid being in scoring position at second base and went down in order in the top of the ninth falling to the Battling Bishops 4-3.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Austin Obenour, Connor Hall, and Tyriq Campbell with one RBI each. Obenour recorded the lone homer for the Marlins to cross home plate, while Zack Clark and Matt Sinko each plated a run. Andrew Lowe (L, 0-1) picked up the loss throwing 6.2 innings giving up six hits and two runs in 27 batters faced. Lowe struck out 11 batters including two looking while throwing 107 total pitches, 76 of which were strikes.

NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Battling Bishops were led by Alec Titmus with one run on two hits, one being a double, and two RBI's while also stealing a base during the game. Chandler Padgett (W, 1-0) earned the win pitching three innings giving up two runs on no hits and Kevin Williams got the save for NCWU after throwing 1.2 innings and striking out two batters en route to helping the Battling Bishops win 4-3.

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, February 15, when they host the Piedmont College Lions in a rescheduled contest from Saturday, February 8. The Marlins and Lions will meet on Kenneth Perry Field at Townebank Park for a 2 PM first pitch in Virginia Beach, VA.
