Box Score Coast Guard Rallies for Late Win over VWC
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Coast Guard Academy only held the lead at two points on Tuesday night, but three goals late in the second half helped push them past the Virginia Wesleyan women's lacrosse team, 11-10.
The Bears scored less than two minutes into the game when Darian McKenna hit the back of the net for an unassisted goal. The Marlins responded three minutes later with a goal from Becca Winslow off a free position shot. Megan Schallock followed up Winslow's goal with two of her own coming just two minutes apart to put Virginia Wesleyan up 3-1 with 20 minutes left in the half.
Coast Guard's Niki Kirchner-Hope broke up the Marlins three-goal run when she scored at the 19:57 mark. After nine minutes without a goal, Rachel Fuller had her second goal of the season off an assist from Avery Frangelli.
The Bears tied the game at four when Cecelia Hosley posted back-to-back goals. The Marlins responded by scoring three before the end of the half to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
The second half opened up the same as the first with a goal from Coast Guard's McKenna to cut the Marlin lead to two. Marie Lerch's goal at the 25:52 mark was her first of the season and put the Marlins back up by three.
A three-goal run by the Bears tied the game up for the second time at eight with just under 20 minutes to play. Becca Winslow gave the Marlins the lead once more with twelve minutes left in the match. Schallock scored her fourth goal of the night to extend the lead to two, 10-8 with 16:09 left.
Coast Guard scored three goals before the end of the second half to win the game. The game-winning shot came from Abigail Bradford as she raced around the mouth of the goal, going low for the score with 1:57 left in the match.
McKenna and Bradford had four points each for Coast Guard (1-3) with McKenna scoring four and Bradford recording three goals and one assist.
Schallock led all players with five points off four goals and one assist. Becca Winslow was second on the team with two goals.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-4) returns to action at home this Friday against Greensboro College (1-2) at 6 p.m.
