Andrea Hoover-Erbig begins her 15th season with the volleyball program in 2020 as the most successful coach in program history.
The 2019 season we the best in program history as Hoover-Erbig led the Marlins to their first ODAC Championship Title as well as an appearance in the NCAA Championship Tournament. VWU posted a 28-8 overall record and went 10-2 against ODAC opponents en route to winning the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. Hoover-Erbig's Marlins had five athletes represented on the ODAC All-Conference team, and saw Amber Matalus earn AVCA Honorable Mention All-American and First-Team All-South Region honors.
In 2018, the Marlins had a tremendous year which saw them earn 16 wins including their first win over a ranked opponent as they dropped No. 20 Christopher Newport University in five sets. Helping with the team's success was Amber Matalus, who was the just the third player in program history to receive All-America status (all under Coach Hoover-Erbig) as she collected an Honorable Mention nod.
Hoover-Erbig led the Marlins to their most successful season in school history in 2015, winning a program-best 25 matches while reaching the ODAC Championship for the first time. The team’s 10 wins in league play also set a school record.
In 2018 her squad finished the year 19-10 and went 8-3 in ODAC play, reaching the conference semifinal.
Her 237 career victories account for more than 80% of all of the wins in program history since the team formed for the 2003 season. She has mentored all five of the Marlins’ 20-win seasons and has led the team to the ODAC semifinals seven times. She won her 200th career match in a three-set defeat of Randolph College in the ODAC Quarterfinals on November 4, 2015.
She has coached the Marlins’ only two All-Americans as Kala Guy was recognized in 2012 and Tiffany Barrett earned honors in 2015. In addition, she has coached one ODAC Rookie of the Year and two ODAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year
Hoover-Erbig was named ODAC Coach of the Year for heading her squad to a 23-11 record in 2008, the first 20-win season in Virginia Wesleyan history.
Prior to her time at Virginia Wesleyan, Hoover-Erbig served as an assistant coach at Marietta College. She was also head coach of Northern High School in Owings, Maryland for two seasons, leading the squad to the Maryland Regionals both seasons. She served as an assistant at Northern prior to taking the role of head coach, helping the squad to state championships in 2000 and 2001.
She has extensive experience as a volleyball camp coordinator and/or instructor at Marietta College, Slippery Rock University, the Beckley, West Virginia YMCA camps, and Calvert County Parks and Recreation camps.
Hoover-Erbig is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
She was a four-year letter winner at Slippery Rock University and is listed among the all-time school leaders in career aces (104) and digs (1,194). She graduated from Slippery Rock in 1999 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in health and physical education with a minor in adapted physical activity and rehabilitation. Hoover received her Masters of Arts in education from Marietta College in 2006.
