Alex Gallagher

Gallagher joined the Virginia Wesleyan Athletic Department as the assistant women's soccer coach in September of 2020. 

In 2021, the Marlins won the ODAC Championship title and advanced to the NCAA first round to face Messiah. VWU went 12-6-2 overall with a 7-1-1 record against ODAC foes. Gallagher helped coach a pair of Marlins in Sam Crawford and Breacain McClenahan, who claimed major ODAC end of year awards in the ODAC Player of teh Year and the ODAC Rookie of the Year respectively. In addition, the Marlins brought in seven ODAC All-Conference team honorees. A trio of Marlins, Crawford, McClenahan, and Kennedi Anders, earned VaSID All-State accolades as well as USC All-Region honors following the completion of the season. 

The 2020 season was a unique one to say the least with the fall sport seasons being played in the spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Marlins went 5-3-1 overall with a 4-2-1 record in conference. Virginia Wesleyan advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC tournament where they fell to Washington & Lee. Five Marlins were named to the ODAC All-Conference teams including Julia Marrone, Kennedi Anders, and Sam Crawford who earned spots on the First Team, while Olivia Bryant and Lexi Soteriou both earned Third Team recognition. Crawford went on to earn VaSID All-State honors. 

Gallagher comes to VWU after attending graduate school at the Soccer Management Institute in Rome, Italy. While at the SMI, Gallagher took courses that focused on the management of sports communication, sports science and nutrition, Italian soccer methodology, coaching-leadership and performance, sports media and press management, coaching- sports psychology, and sports legal and management.

During her two years in Italy, Gallagher competed in the third highest level of soccer as she played for the Serie C Decimo Quarto Women's Team. She also led the team in goals during her time on the team. 

Prior to playing in Italy, Gallagher was a key component of the Misericordia University Cougars women's soccer team. Gallagher appeared in 84 of 85 matches as a Cougar and helped the team to four consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearances from 2014-2017 including a Sweet 16 appearance her freshman season. She tallied 36 goals and 18 assists for 90 career points as a forward on the team. Gallagher sits tied for 10th in Misericordia Women's Soccer career points records with 90 and is tied for 8th in career goals records with 36. She is a three time All-Region honoree, a 2017 Scholar All-American, and was named the 2015 MAC Freedom Conference Offensive Player of the Year. One of the biggest plays in her collegiate career was when she scored the game-winning goal with 7:03 remaining in a double-over match against Wilkes University to win the 2017 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship.
